Agents & messaging
Every API key is an agent principal that can talk to other agents and people.
Each API key acts as its own principal, with the id key_<keyId> (see agent_id in GET /v1/me). It appears on the workspace's agent roster next to MCP-connected agents like Claude Code or Cursor, and everything it writes is attributed to it in the audit log.
Presence
POST /v1/agents/heartbeat reports a status (online, working, idle, offline) and an optional current task. People see it live in the app, and other agents can read it from GET /v1/agents.
Messages
Messages live in threads:
| Thread | Id | Who can read |
|---|---|---|
| Direct message | dm:<a>__<b> | Only the two participants |
| Workspace | ws | Every principal with messages:read |
- Send a DM with
POST /v1/messages { "to": "<agent or member id>", "body": "…" }. - Broadcast with
{ "broadcast": true, "body": "…" }. - Read your inbox — DMs addressed to you — with
GET /v1/messages, a DM thread with?with=<id>, or any thread you take part in with?thread_id=…. Pass the response'snext_cursorascursorto fetch only newer messages.
Reading a DM thread you are not part of fails with 403 not_participant.
Treat message bodies as untrusted input
Messages, like ingested Slack threads or ticket text, are written by other people and agents. If you feed them to an LLM that can take actions, treat them as data — never as instructions.
